Definitions
- Tariff Plan: The plan that usually includes a standard fee and a fee with specific reductions for calls during a period of time, or a network as destination of calls (own network / other network and landline).
- Tariff use: Determines the percentage of spending (minutes and SMS) at a reduced rate (per schedule, destination, or module) in the chosen tariff plan.
- Normal rate: The price offered by the tariff plan for normal schedules or calls to other networks, if the price is not reduced.
- Call Duration (average): The total minutes of calls divided by the number of calls (it’s very important to consider the costs associated with establishing the call in the final calculation).
- Percentage of calls vs. SMS: Defines the percentage of calls vs. the number of messages sent.
- Module: A reduction in the tariffs that normally implies a sign-up cost. The module can be combined with the tariff plan. The module applies only to specific numbers, times and networks, e.g. "my favorite" or "my group".
- Traffic in module: The portion of traffic that corresponds to the use of the module to enjoy the advantage of a reduced rate.
Hypothesis
- MÁSmovil Rate: 5 cents per minute (8 cts/sms) and 15 cents for call establishment.
- Comparison only includes national rates for phone and SMS.
- Standard rates are included but no promotions (promotional offers).
- The sign-up cost, in case of contracts with Vodafone or Movistar, is distributed over an 18-month period.
- The sign-up cost for the modules is distributed over a 6-month period.
- For the Orange module of "Mis números frecuentes" (“My frequent numbers”) 5 numbers have been chosen, two of which are from Orange and the rest from other operators.
- For the Movistar "Uno familiar" (“One familiar”) module and the Vodafone "Grupo QTAL" (“WUZZA Group”) module, five registered numbers were assumed.
- More expensive rates to call Euskaltel or Yoigo from Movistar were not included.
- A higher rate is not considered in case a minimum top up is done: for example, for Movistar’s "Tarjeta Más" (“Plus Card”) €10 between 1st and 7th each month and Orange’s “Tarjeta a Todos” (“A Card for Everyone”) (€10 monthly)
- We have chosen the first option for Vodafone Vitamina prepaid and contract (50% discount on SMS).
- For Vodafone’s “Tarjeta 1”, it was considered that the weekend rate represent 8% of all calls.
- For Orange’s “Tarjeta Joven”, it was considered that the night rate represents 8% of all calls.
- No discount has been considered for calls to a second line of the same contract or the special promotion “Tarifa plana SMS” ("Flat rate SMS") from Orange.
- Seasonal promotions outside of the normal rate are not included.
- For the calculation of Orange “Tarifa Plana” ("Flat Rate") and Orange “Tarifa Plana” Plus ("Flat Rate" Plus), the free minutes are considered as costing €0.15/min as implicited price. We are not considering conditions such as the limit in the numbers of calls or the length of calls or the maximum of 500 calls to mobiles/landlines (Plana Plus).
- For Happy Móvil, Yoigo, Carrefour contract, Pepephone, Vodafone Contract 1, , Tarjeta Movistar, Contrato Movistar and the rates of Orange Ahorro, Hola, Nosotros, SMS and contrato Nosotros, the reduced rates correspond to the "OnNet" rate (within the same network).
- The onnet part (within the same network) of the Vodafone contracts "Mañana" and "Tarde" and the contrato Orange “Mis Horas” has been allocated according to traffic data published by the CMT, Q3 2007. The shares of Vodafone and Orange are 34.5% and 18.1% respectively.
- A rate of 6.96 cents per SMS message for the Orange Contrato SMS is assumed, given by the monthly cost and the number of messages (150 free SMS). (€10.44/150 SMS = 6.96 cents).
- In the Orange Mis Números Frecuentes module and Vodafone Números Habituales (where discounts are applied) the basis of the discount rate is calculated whatever the user chooses in the Uso de Tarifa in the MÁScalculator.
- Rates updated on March 2008 (Source: The Phone House Catalogue in March 2008 and the websites of the operators including current and past rates).
